Garden Walks
Roses & Ice Cream
Monday, June 30, 6-7:30 pm
Enjoy creamy bliss as you discover Olbrich's innovative Rose Garden with Olbrich Horticulture Director Jeff Epping. Learn about both shrub and garden roses, as well as sustainable garden elements such as drain tiles, rain gardens, pest resistance, local hardscaping materials, and low-maintenance plant varieties.

Garden Design & Ice Cream  CLASS FILLED

Dive into our ice cream freezer and then head into the garden with Olbrich Horticulturist Samantha Egan. Enjoy creamy bliss as you learn about garden design elements such as shapes, colors, hardscaping, paths, and water features.

Shade & Lemonade
Tuesday, July 15, 5:30-7 pm
What could be more pleasant than lemonade in the shade on a hot July day? You'll sip as you stroll through shade gardens with Olbrich Horticulturist Wendy Gasch. Learn about selection and care of the huge variety of beautiful shade plants available to home gardeners. Please join our sustainability efforts; bring a travel mug for your lemonade!

Family Walk: Flashlights and Fireflies
Bring your flashlight along as we dance with fireflies and explore the Gardens by moonlight. We'll visit the Thai Pavilion and Rose Garden, Olbrich's two lit gardens, and then head to darker places to look for nighttime creatures. Limit one session per family. Children must attend with a parent. Price below is per person.

Meditation in the Gardens
Join Kevin Walsh, MM, RN, Certified Heart Rhythm Meditation Teacher, and Jody Curley, MA, Certified Heart Rhythm Meditation Instructor and Tai Chi Chuan Teacher, for a unique combination of Tai Chi and Heart Rhythm Meditation. Both practices help to decrease reactivity to stress, enhance mental focus and clarity, and expand the sense of well-being. Together, these two complementary practices are beautiful and practical methods of improving health, balance, and well-being. See www.olbrich.org for a more detailed description. Held outdoors

Yoga
This is a participative experiential class for gardeners, nature enthusiasts, and yoga students. Held outdoors when weather permits. Comfortable, loosefitting clothing and a portable mat are recommended; feel free to bring a water bottle. Instructor, Jonathan A. Garber RMT, is a certified Kripalu Yoga and Yoga for the Special Child Teacher.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attend free. Maximum of 2 children per adult please. Advance registration required. Most children's classes will be cancelled in inclement weather; call 608/246-4550 to confirm.

Nature Writing for Kids   CLASS CANCELLED
Join writing teacher, Evelyn Westbrook, to write and illustrate your own collection of nature stories and poems inspired by the gardens at Olbrich. Each week, read children's literature and then head outdoors to explore the gardens. By closely observing nature's details, children will author and illustrate their own stories and poems. Children will need close assistance from an adult, who will carefully record their language and words. Attend one or all four sessions to create a book of your masterpieces. Each participant will receive a bound journal to work in. For ages 4-6.

ABCs Naturally: Letters in the Gardens  CLASS FILLED
Wednesday, June 25, 10-11:30 am
Learn your letters by discovering them in nature. Join special guests, Jann Kalscheur and Lynne Diebel, co-authors of the children's book, ABCs Naturally, on an alphabetical journey in the natural world. Read ABCs Naturally, then go for a letter hunt in the gardens. Everyone will take home a collage of nature letters. For ages 4 & up.

Butterfly Arts & Crafts
After touring Olbrich's Blooming Butterflies exhibit, stop by this weekly session and make a fun butterfly of your own to take home. Each week will offer a different arts and crafts project that highlights butterflies and insects. Sign up for one or all four! For ages 4 & up.

Butterflies and Blooms
Enjoy a guided trip through the outdoor gardens, discovering the butterflies and bugs that live there and the beautiful flowers and plants they are attracted to. Every child will use a "Discovery Kit" to help them explore the gardens. For ages 4 & up.

Weekly Toddler Story & Stroll

This special Olbrich's Blooming Butterflies series focuses on insects in the garden. Every week features stories about butterflies, bugs, or plants, as well as a walk through Olbrich's outdoor gardens. Designed to stimulate the senses of babies and toddlers. For ages 1 to 4. Breakfast for the Butterflies
Come to this special behind the scenes class as you help Olbrich get ready for a busy day of Olbrich's Blooming Butterflies. Work side by side with the staff as you feed the butterflies, birds, and fish in the conservatory. Learn about where the butterflies come from and how the chrysalis cases are set up. For ages 8 & up.

Create a Willow Teepee Trellis
Wednesday, June 11, 5:30-9 pm
Join artist Dan Soman and make your own rustic willow teepee trellis. Use it for climbing plants, or as a garden sculpture. Dan will provide willow, tools, and instructions needed to create a 6-7' trellis. Class time is scheduled for three and a half hours, but depending on your creativity, you may spend more or less time to create your trellis. Regardless, you will gain the knowledge to make trellises on your own. Please make arrangements for a vehicle large enough to transport your trellis. See www.olbrich.org for a photo. Mosaic Garden Stepping Stones
Thursday, July 24, 6-9 pm
Join mosaic artist Megan Cain and create beautiful garden stepping stones! Learn the basic techniques for creating custom, decorative mosaic stepping stones using glass or tile pieces. You'll complete one stone in this one-session course, plus learn the skills to create more on your own in the future. Please see www.olbrich.org for a photo.

Herbal Pantry
Tuesday, August 5, 6:30-8:30 pm
Late summer is the perfect time to stock your herbal pantry by transforming your garden's harvest into herbal vinegars, pesto, dried herb blends, flavored honey, herbal syrups, and tea blends. Join Lauri Lee, Past President of the Madison Herb Society, to learn how to harvest and dry your herbs for peak flavor; as well as how to make pesto and herbal vinegar. You'll enjoy tasting some of the herbal bounty and you'll go home with samples, recipes and handouts.

Sand-Cast Leaf Birdbath  CLASS FILLED
Monday & Wednesday, August 25 & 27, 6:30-8:30 pm
Join Schonheit Gardens' Nursery Manager Jane Gahlman, and use large leaves like hosta and burdock to create a sand-cast birdbath. Your finished birdbath will be leaf-shaped, complete with veins and color accents. This class is divided into two sessions to allow concrete drying time. Dress to get dirty!

Bee My Honey:
How to Attract Beneficial Insects to your Garden

Join Olbrich Horticulturist Samantha Egan for a talk about beneficial insects. Review what beneficial insects are and how you can identify them in your yard. Also, learn what these insects can do for you, and how you can easily create a landscape that they will return to year after year!
